New: Explosion-Safe traffic lights for offshore and industrial ATEX areas

On an offshore platform or in a refinery, reliable traffic lights are a crucial part of a safe working environment. They must not only be Explosion-Safe and highly visible, but also continue to operate under harsh offshore conditions where corrosion is constantly present.

Discover our traffic light for Zone 2/22 (AR-045) and Zone 1/21 (AR-049). The housing is fully made of stainless steel. The lamps feature a 4 mm thick impact-resistant window, an O-ring seal, and encapsulated electronics. The result? A traffic light that is resistant to water and salt. We couldn’t make it more robust.

The traffic light is available in single, double, or triple configurations and can be supplied in any combination of colors: red, yellow (amber), or green. Sunshades are supplied as standard, ensuring the lamps remain clearly visible even in bright sunlight. Depending on the connection, you can choose between continuous or flashing light.

The traffic light is Explosion-Proof and certified in accordance with the European Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114). It also carries CE marking (EMC).

Development of the ATEX traffic light

We wanted to add a traffic light to our product range. In a development process like this, the first version can sometimes come together surprisingly quickly. Within one month, we created the first prototype, based on our AR-048 LED lighting. For this prototype, we used a standard enclosure and drilled openings for the AR-048 LED lamps. The enclosure and lamps were then white coated, resulting in the first traffic light model. It worked, but we were not fully satisfied with it. The design was quite robust and clearly not yet a product ready for the market.

That is why we continued developing it. In the second version, we improved the design and looked at how it could be made more compact and cost-efficient. This version met the objective, but it was still mainly a “special”, developed for one specific customer.

After the certification of the AR-048 for ATEX Zone 1 and 21, it was time for the next step: the final version. Not only suitable for Zone 2 and 22, but also for Zone 1 and 21 areas.

This development process clearly shows the 80–20 rule: the first 80% of a solution can be realized relatively quickly, but the last 20%—the details, optimization, and development into a mature product—often require much more time and attention. Overall, we have been working on this for several years. It shows how we keep refining our products until they meet the quality we stand for at Artidor. Simply put, we are not easily satisfied.
